Why labs pay for it
Labs have been taken to court over text they did not license, and one settled for about $3,000 a book. Edited, expert writing with a clear rights holder is now bought, not scraped.
SteadyLarge publishers' licences are holding (one reported $49M of AI revenue in its 2026 fiscal year). Smaller and non-English publishers are mostly offered revenue shares, not cash.

A publisher often holds print rights without holding AI training rights; authors may need to agree title by title. User-written content belongs to its writers unless the terms say otherwise.
We represent archives with one clear rights holder. Collections of small publishers are stronger sold together, and we say when a revenue-share scheme is the realistic route.
Who buys it
Defined.ai
No rate card. It states "$600K+ average partner revenue" and "$1M+" for five or more partners.
Datarade
The seller sets the price. Datarade takes 30% commission, or 20% to 15% on a paid plan of $6,000 to $12,000 a year.
Created by Humans
Individual deals expected to run from hundreds to thousands of dollars, in proportion to a book's sales (its chief executive, reported).
Opendatabay
The seller keeps 70% of a sale up to $100, rising to 95% above $250,000 (the commission falls from 30% to 5% as the sale grows). In a brokered sale the seller gets the agreed provider price and Opendatabay sets its own price to the buyer.
